Free pattern for a small Christmas ornament
This small Christmas ornament can be crocheted easily in no time.
It is approx. 5 - 7 cm (2 - 3 inch) high. The finished size depends on your yarn weight.

You'll need:
- a small amount of yarn of your choice
- a suitable crochet hook
- a tapestry needle
- scissors
for decoration:
- scrap yarn in different colours
- a smaller crochet hook (optional)
The pattern is worked with taller becoming linked crochet stitches into chains.
The result is a larger becoming spiral.
This is how the pattern looks like - it is written in US terms:
Abbreviations:
ch - chain
st(s) - stitch(es)
sc - single crochet
hdc - half double crochet
dc - double crochet
tr - treble crochet
yo - yarn over
Pattern:
- ch 18
- insert hook into the 5th st from hook and work 5 sc into this ch
- 5 sc in the next two chains each
- 5 hdc in the next three chains each
- 5 linked dc in the next three chains each:
For a linked dc pick up a loop from the previous st instead of the yarn over. This gives a tighter fabric.
Insert hook into the vertical bar of the last hdc (pic. on the left), yo and pull up a loop, then insert hook in next ch, yo and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). To close the st pull through two loops twice.
For the next linked dc pick up a loop from the vertical bar (pic. on the right).
- 5 linked tr in the next three chains each:
Pick up two loops from the last dc (pic. on the left), then insert hook in next ch, yo and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook). To close the st pull through two loops three times.
Pick up sts from the tr by pulling up loops from the two vertical bars (pic. on the right).
You may recognize the stitch pattern: linked stitches are actually the same as Tunisian crochet.
- 4 linked dc in the next ch:
Insert hook under both vertical bars, yo and pull up a loop through both bars at once (=decrease), then insert hook in the next ch and finish st.
- 3 hdc and 1 sc in the next ch
- weave in ends, pull a thread through the top for the hanger and decorate.
I crocheted small bobbles for decoration. If possible, use thinner yarn and a smaller crochet hook.
- ch 2
- *yo, insert hook in the first ch, yo and pull up a loop*, repeat twice (7 loops on hook), don't work too tight!
- yo and pull through all 7 loops on hook
- ch 1
- cut yarn and pull out hook
- squeeze bobble to a round shape and tie to the tree
This is the pattern for a larger version of the tree:
- ch 22
- 5 sc in 5th ch from hook and the following two ch each
- 5 hdc in the next three ch each
- 5 linked dc in the next three ch each
- 5 linked tr in the next three ch each
- 5 linked double tr in the next three ch each
- 4 linked tr in the next ch
- 4 linked dc in the next ch
- 3 hdc and 1 sc in the next ch
By the way, crocheting with scrubbie-yarn makes lovely little trees.
